Welcome to Year 1
We have all settled in well to Year One and we are delighted by the progress the children have made so far.
The main theme this term will be ‘Where in the world shall we go?’ We will follow the children’s interests and we are excited to work with the children to see which direction our big question will lead us towards. We are looking to open the children’s eyes to the world around us and a range of cultures. If any members of your family have experience of different cultures and would like to come and share your experiences with us, please speak to your child’s class teacher.
We will be studying some fantastic texts in our English work which will focus on stories from different cultures and countries. As ‘Artists’, we will be learning how to create moods using paint. As ‘Musicians’ we will continue to read some musical notes and perform to our peers in our recorder lessons. As ‘Scientists’ we will be learning about different types of animals and sorting them in different ways. As ‘Computer Users’ we will be recording digital data. As ‘Geographers’ we will be considering the things that can be found in cold and hot places. We will also be naming main towns, cities and countries in the UK. The children continue to have access to our outdoor environment during choice and challenge time. As ‘Designers’ we will be using our own ideas to plan, adapt and evaluate large scale models as well as designing and making homes for different climates.
Some lessons are taught discretely such as RE and PSHE. In PSHE we will thinking about our own emotions and the feelings of others. In RE we will be learning about Judaism. In PE we will practise catching and bouncing a ball as well as putting movements together in a sequence during gymnastics.
The children are thoroughly enjoying their Friday creative afternoon. In January they will move onto their next activity; either yoga & sewing, Commando Joe, arts & crafts or Forest School. Many thanks go to our dedicated Teachers and Teaching Partners who lead these activities.
Miss Moss, who is based in Orange Class, has made a fantastic start to her school based teacher training. In term 3 she will be moving to Charlton Kings Junior School to gain experience of teaching an alternative age group. During this time Mrs Fox will be covering Mrs Parsons’ PPA time on a Wednesday. Miss Moss will then return to Orange Class in March for the remainder of the academic year. Miss Smart has been a fantastic addition to our Year 1 team since November. Miss Weyman has given birth to a beautiful little girl called Olivia. We wish her all the best at this exciting time.
Home learning and Reading
We would like to thank you for all your support with learning at home. The children have been working hard to learn their spelling of common exception words and it is essential this continues as we move into term 3. We would also like to remind you about the importance of reading. It is important to encourage children to read a wide variety of different texts including non-fiction and poetry. Books do not have to be returned daily and children are of course welcome to read their own books in addition to school books. Please remember to use your online ‘Bug Club’ reading account to support and extend your child’s reading. Your child also has access to an online programme called ‘mathletics’ which lots of children have thoroughly enjoyed so far.
In KS1 we welcome children to complete home learning projects. If you would like to, children are invited to complete a project about a country or continent of their choice. The project can be in any format you wish, such as a poster, booklet or piece of art work. Please bring these projects into school in the final week of the spring term. (week beginning 1st April)
